Flying with a stoma? I promise it’s easier than you think. Going through airport security as an ostomate might seem daunting, but with a bit of preparation, (and some insider tips) you’ll fly through!
The new scanners and why they always flag my bag
So, if you have been through a UK airport recently, you may have noticed the new scanners. Unlike the old ones, these actually flag up your stoma bag every single time. The first time, I had no idea. A staff member asked if I had something in my right-hand pocket and I said no, then realised that the scanner must have picked up my stoma bag. Once I explained, they were really understanding, did a gentle search and talked me through it. Now, to pre-empt this, I always tell them I have a stoma bag before going through the scanner.
So what would I suggest:
- Empty your bag before going through security – so if you do get searched, you’ll feel more comfortable
- Let the staff know you have a stoma when going through the scanners
My secret to a stress-free trip abroad
So what about going through airport security abroad where there may be a language barrier? Well you can actually get these handy travel certificates that explain what a stoma is and why you need to carry supplies with you in a range of different languages. I took one of these with me when I went to Malysia earlier this year and although I didn’t need it, it was great peace of mind!
Packing like a pro
- Always always always split supplies across hand luggage and checked in bags.
- Check liquid rules! Adhesive remover sprays will usually count as aerosols, so they need to go in your clear liquid bag.
- Overpacking is a must. I always take double what I think I will need. Better safe than sorry!
This isn’t the first stoma at security
People all over the world have stomas and us ostomates travel all over the world with our stomas. Chances are most airport staff have seen it all before. So there is really no need to stress and have an amazing holiday!
