Living with a stoma definitely has its “learning curve” moments, doesn’t it? If you follow me over on Instagram, you’ll know that I’m all about finding ways to make life with an ostomy feel less like a full-time job and more like just a small part of my routine.
Managing IBD or a chronic illness is enough work on its own. After my surgery, I quickly realised that anything I could do to shave off five minutes of stress or prevent a stoma bag emergency was a win in my book. Here are the things that genuinely make my life with a stoma easier:
Pre-cut stoma bags are a game-changer
I mentioned this in my previous post about spring cleaning your supplies but I can’t talk about this one enough! If your stoma has settled into a consistent size, ask your delivery service to pre-cut your bags for you.
Respond makes this so easy, and it saves me from faffing around with scissors every time I need to change my bag. One less thing to worry about, especially when I’m tired or in a rush.
The on-the-go stoma kit
I never leave the house without my little kit. I use a cute, clear pouch (mine has little teddies on it) so I can see exactly what’s inside without rummaging.
In this I keep three spare stoma bags, dry wipes, adhesive remover spray, barrier wipes and disposal bags. Having this tucked in my backpack gives me the confidence to say yes to plans without that nagging ‘what if’ in the back of my mind.
Choosing the right clothes for me
In the early days, as a lot of people do, I worried about what I could wear. Now, I’ve found that high-waisted everything is my best ‘go to’ hack. Whether it’s jeans, gym leggings, elasticated waist skirts, pyjamas; you know it, it helps to keep my bag secure and smooth under my clothes. It’s about feeling supported and comfortable, so stoma supportwear is a must-have in my day-to-day wardrobe. I tend to wear normal knickers with my pyjamas then high-waisted support wear in the day.
When I feel comfortable in the outfit I’m wearing, I’m not constantly checking my reflection or worrying about my bag filling up, sagging or dragging away from my stomach.
Adhesive remover spray
If you aren’t using a medical adhesive remover spray yet, consider this as your sign to start. The spray helps my bag adhesive come away from my skin smoothly when its time for a bag change, without any snags or sore spots.
It’s so much kinder to your skin around your stoma (peristomal skin) and I also use a barrier wipe before putting a new bag on. Happy skin = happy me, and happy Stacey stoma!
Finding a community
One of the biggest things that makes my life with a stoma easier isn’t a physical product. It was finding the community. Being an ambassador for Respond and connecting with those who just get it changed everything for me.
Sharing tips, laughing about the awkward moments and seeing other people thrive after stoma surgery reminds me every day that I’m not alone. If you ever need a chat or some encouragement, you can find me on Instagram!
A reliable delivery service
Nothing adds to stoma stress quite like wondering if your supplies will show up on time. Using Respond has taken that weight off my shoulders completely. Knowing my monthly delivery is sorted means I can focus on living my life rather than chasing! It’s that peace of mind that makes the world of difference.
To make my life with a stoma smoother, I focus on streamlining my routine and protecting my peace of mind. From including pre-cut bags and adhesive remover sprays to simplifying changes both in and away from home, I like to ensure I’m prepared.
Beyond my supplies, high-waisted clothing and supportwear is a must for my comfort and confidence, and using Respond has really helped to take away stress. Above all of this, community is everything! Without those around me to turn to, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start small by organising an ‘on-the-go bag’ like mine. Having this safety net tucked in your bag or in your car can instantly lower your anxiety, and help you reclaim your confidence.
