Living with a stoma comes with its own unique challenges, especially during the warm weather when heat and humidity can cause some discomfort. However, by making a few simple adjustments, you can forget your worries and enjoy the summer with a sense of confidence. The following tips and strategies have worked for me, and I’m confident that they’ll work for you.

Sweating around the baseplate

Perspiration is one of the biggest problems I experience during warm weather. For some reason, I sweat more now than I did before my colostomy. It can affect the adhesion of the baseplate, compromising the seal and making it prone to leaks. To manage this, I’ve been prepping my skin by using a barrier film, which helps create a clean and dry surface before I apply the baseplate. This helps it stick better, even when I’m sweating. Another tip is to use a stoma powder sparingly around the area if you notice any irritation or moisture buildup. It absorbs excess sweat and helps prevent skin breakdown.

Skin irritation caused by moisture buildup

Moisture buildup from sweating can cause skin irritation around the stoma area. To help prevent this, it’s important to maintain a clean and dry area around the stoma. Cleaning the area with a barrier cream and patting it dry thoroughly before applying any products. If irritation does occur, applying a soothing, stoma-friendly moisturiser or protective powder could provide relief and prevent leaks.

Here are my top tips:

  • Drinking water: when it’s hot, our bodies lose water through sweating, so staying hydrated helps replace lost fluids.
  • Regular cleaning: Gently clean the area with water and ensure it’s thoroughly dried afterwards.
  • Breathable clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing to reduce sweating and allow air circulation.
  • Frequent changes: Changing your stoma bags regularly to prevent moisture from building up.
  • Monitor for signs: regularly check for any signs of irritation or infection and consult your stoma nurse, if needed.

Products that make a difference

Certain products have been game-changers for me. For instance, I use Respond’s REFRESH 3IN1 stoma adhesive spray, with the added barrier film for extra security and a lovely linen scent. It creates a stronger bond, it’s kinder on my skin and makes me feel more confident even on the hottest days.

I also use RENEW Protective Powder, which removes excess moisture from my skin, creating a stronger seal and protecting the skin from any irritants from frequent changes.

A must-have product for any time of the year is GUARD Barrier Cream. Infused with lavender and aloe vera, it helps moisturise and soothe the skin, especially after shaving. It’s gentle and kind on even sensitive skin and forms a barrier against irritants and excrement.

Staying confident in the heat

Confidence is just as important as comfort. I remind myself that having a stoma doesn’t limit my ability to enjoy life. Whether I’m at the beach, on a walk, or just relaxing in the sun, I focus on staying prepared. I always take my Respond washbag with me wherever I go and make sure it is topped up regularly.

Warm weather doesn’t have to be a barrier to enjoying life with a stoma. By making small adjustments to your routine, and using the right products, you can stay comfortable and confident all summer long. Remember, preparation and a positive mindset go a long way in making the most of the sunny days ahead!
