The start of a new year is always a great time to reflect on how far we’ve come. Living with a stoma has had its ups and downs, but looking back at 2024, I see so many incredible milestones that remind me of my strength, growth, and resilience. If January feels a little gloomy, I hope by sharing my journey, it can help brighten your perspective and encourage you to celebrate your own progress.
Milestones with my ostomy in 2024
Taking up running & facing osteopenia
The beginning of 2024 marked a big personal challenge – I took up running seriously for the first time and even signed up for a half marathon to support Crohn’s & Colitis UK. Unfortunately, my journey took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with osteopenia (a condition where bones lose density, increasing the risk of fractures). It was a tough pill to swallow, but I didn’t let it hold me back! Despite being on crutches, I still managed to enjoy an amazing holiday in Mexico, once again proving to myself that nothing will stop me from living life to the fullest.
Attending the ‘Get Together’ for the third year
One of my favourite events each year is the Get Together, and 2024 was no exception. It was my third time attending, and it just keeps getting better! From a well-being workshop to an empowering body positivity photoshoot. I had the chance to reconnect with my amazing friends and meet all the new inspiring ambassadors. These events remind me how amazing it is to be a part of a community where there is understanding, support and positivity.
Starting a new job in events & social media
In 2024, I got an exciting opportunity for a new job in events management and social media. What’s even better is that I get to work with charity clients on a daily basis! It’s been a whirlwind few months, learning the ropes and hosting my first event. So far, it’s been an exciting and fulfilling journey, and I am really looking forward to what’s to come!
Representing Pelican & Respond at the Marketing Awards
Another unforgettable experience was attending the Marketing Awards with Pelican and Respond, where they were nominated for ‘Best Use of Influencers’. It was an honour to represent our group of ambassadors alongside Keith, and while we didn’t take home the trophy, the experience itself was a win. Being part of such an amazing team that really cares about ostomates and community is really something else.
Falling in love with Pilates
A huge personal win in 2024 was discovering my love for Pilates. What started with mat Pilates quickly evolved into reformer Pilates, and now it’s a key part of my weekly fitness routine. It’s been an incredible way to build core strength, improve flexibility, and support my overall well-being.
Another year as a Pelican & Respond ambassador
Being an ambassador for Pelican and Respond for another year has been an amazing experience. Through social media posts, blogs, and awareness campaigns, We’ve continued spreading the message that life with a stoma is nothing to hide – it’s something to embrace!
Becoming a volunteer for Crohn’s & Colitis UK
Last but certainly not least, I officially signed up as a volunteer for Crohn’s & Colitis UK to help in my local region. Giving back to the community that has supported me is incredibly rewarding, and I can’t wait to do more in 2025 – so watch this space!
Stepping into 2025 & embracing the year ahead
January can feel like a long and dreary month, but it’s the perfect time to set a positive tone for the rest of the year. Here are a few practical ways to embrace 2025 with a positive mindset:
Plan a self-care day
Whether it’s a relaxing bath, a full skincare routine, a cosy movie night, or treating yourself to something special, taking time for self-care is essential. You deserve it!
Connect with the ostomy community
Surrounding yourself with people who truly understand your journey can be uplifting. Join support groups, attend meetups, or engage with fellow ostomates online.
Set positive goals
Whether it’s fitness, career, personal growth, or even just embracing more self-love, setting achievable goals can give you a sense of purpose and motivation. Don’t stress about New Year’s resolutions that feel impossible to keep – if something doesn’t go to plan, that’s okay! Progress isn’t about being perfect – it’s about doing what works for you.
Celebrate how far you’ve come
Take a moment to acknowledge everything you’ve overcome. Living with a stoma isn’t always easy, but every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating.
As we step into 2025, look back on your last year and think of all the amazing things you have done and achieved. You are strong & resilient and should be proud of that! Let’s make 2025 a year of growth, happiness, and new adventures. Here’s to celebrating our ostomy journeys and embracing all that’s ahead!
