With a little preparation you can fully embrace the joys of summer while confidently enjoying your favourite outdoor activities from walking and hiking to cycling and water sports. In this blog post, we share some tips to help you make the most of your summer months with a stoma, ensuring that nothing holds you back from experiencing the great outdoors.
Stay hydrated: In warmer weather, it’s important to stay hydrated to prevent dehydration. Always keep a water bottle handy, and drink frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
Pack extra supplies: Ensure you have extra supplies of bags, seals, and any other accessories you use in case of emergencies or unexpected circumstances. If you’re participating in water activities, it may be beneficial to carry a small waterproof bag or pouch to keep your supplies dry. Having a well-stocked supply kit on hand will help you manage any unexpected situations with confidence, allowing you to stay active and carefree.
Empty your bag: Empty or change your bag before activities to prevent it getting too full and causing discomfort. This will also reduce the risk of leakage during exercise. Popping a solidifying agent like ABSORB into your pouch will help thicken output and minimise movement inside your pouch.
Outdoor activities: Many activities can be enjoyed with a stoma, including walking, hiking, swimming, cycling, yoga, and golf. Explore different activities and find what works best for you. Consider your level of activity, and the amount of heat and sweat you will be experiencing. The adhesive part of your bag that sticks to your skin may react differently than what you are used to and may affect the wear time or how long the bag stays secure for.
