Managing my stoma in summertime

Hopefully summer 2023 will be a hot and sunny time for all of us; those of us with a stoma, however, have had to learn to expect some different behaviours from our stomas and our bags that we can’t ignore or take for granted.

Change in output

My ileostomy output is rarely thicker than porridge all her round but now and again when the weather gets warmer, the output gets a lot thinner and more watery. It is a sure reminder to stay well-hydrated at all times and also to remember to replace salts that your body loses naturally when you sweat.

Stay Hydrated

In a previous blog, I put up a simple recipe for a home-made rehydration solution and I keep some handy in the fridge for when I need it. See below for a reminder of the recipe – it’s quick to make and also much cheaper that the familiar powders on the pharmacy counters.

Recipe: Mix 6 level teaspoons of sugar, 1/2 level teaspoon salt into 1 litre of cooled, boiled water.

Frequent Bag Changing

Undoubtedly with more output, you will have to be changing your bag more often, so there is less wear time for your appliance. Whether it’s a one or two piece, my rule of thumb is, once it starts to itch, it’s time to change the bag, preventing accidents and/or leaks.

Adhesive Issues

Personally I have not experienced any problems with the adhesive, but maybe it’s because I haven’t spent a prolonged period of time in any really hot weather. However it is definitely something I will be aware of when I go to Cyprus later this year and I will ensure I have plenty of spare back plates and bags for my two- piece appliance when I go.

Every summer is a learning curve for ostomates. As long as we just remember to look out for changes in our stomas in line with the important points listed above, I’m sure we’ll be absolutely fine!
